What to bring on your whale watching trip

When going whale watching, it's important to be prepared and bring a few essential items to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Here are some things you should consider taking:

  • Binoculars: A good pair of binoculars will help you spot whales that may be further away from the boat. Look for binoculars with a magnification of around 8x or 10x. If you do not have binoculars and do not want to purchase them they are available for rent at our location.
  • Camera: Capture the incredible moments by bringing a camera with a zoom lens or a telephoto lens. This way, you can take close-up shots of the whales and their behaviors.
  • Clothing and Layers: Dress in layers and wear weather-appropriate clothing. Even if it's warm on land, it can get chilly out on the water. Bring a windproof jacket, hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
  • Water and Snacks: It's a good idea to stay hydrated, so bring a water bottle with you. Additionally, pack some snacks or light refreshments to keep your energy up during the trip. Our standard and luxury whale watch trips have snack bars on board. Our ultimate whale watch experience does not have snack bar services.
  • Motion Sickness Remedies: If you are prone to motion sickness, consider taking appropriate medications or remedies. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for the best options for you. Our ticket office carries several over the counter brands of montion sickness medication.
  • Comfortable Shoes: Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes with good traction. The boat may be wet, and you might need to move around to get the best view of the whales. High heels and footwear with leather soles are not permitted.
  • Waterproof Bag or Case: Protect your belongings, especially electronics, from splashes and potential water damage by keeping them in a waterproof bag or case. Our standard and luxury whale tours are on larger vessels with very little chance of getting wet. Our ultimate whale watch tour is on a smaller vessel where a waterproof bag is recommended.
  • Wildlife Field Guide: Consider bringing a wildlife field guide or a book on marine mammals. It can be helpful to learn about the different whale species you may encounter during the whale watching excursion. All of our whale tours are fully narrated when viewing marine mammals. A feild guide is still a great idea to be able to take notes.
